Association of Ontario Midwives to Leave X (formerly Twitter)

March 11, 2025

The Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM) has made the decision to discontinue active engagement on X (formerly Twitter). This decision aligns with our ongoing commitment to fostering respectful, evidence-based discussions that support reproductive justice, human rights and equity in perinatal care.

In making this choice, we stand in solidarity with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), which recently announced its departure from X due to increasing concerns about the platform’s failure to curb misinformation, hate speech and harmful rhetoric. We echo the ICM’s concerns about the negative impact of these issues on the midwifery profession, birthing communities and the broader public. As the ICM has urged other midwifery organizations to reconsider their presence on X, we are taking this step in response to that call and in alignment with our values.

Social media is a vital tool for advocacy, education and connection, but the erosion of trust and safety on X has made it increasingly difficult to engage in constructive dialogue. The AOM remains committed to ensuring that midwifery voices continue to be heard and valued. We will continue to share resources, updates and advocacy efforts through BlueSky, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, where we can better engage with our members, partners and the public in an environment that aligns with our mission. The AOM is monitoring the impacts of recent changes to Meta policies as concerns grow regarding privacy, misinformation, online safety and the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. We will continue to assess these developments and keep our members and community informed of any decisions affecting our digital presence.

While we will no longer be active on X, we will keep our account open to prevent potential misuse of the AOM’s identity and to safeguard the integrity of our organization.

We invite our members and followers to stay connected with us on our other platforms as we continue to advocate for midwifery care, reproductive rights and equitable health care for all people in Ontario and beyond.
