Newborns
Physical Assessment of the Newborn guidelines conducted in the first four hours after birth, at 10 to 14 days of age, and at a “discharge exam” (4-6 weeks). The guidelines note the areas that should be examined, and some of the essential points, but do not include all of the possible abnormal findings which a midwife might note. Any unusual finding should be documented and appropriate follow-up should be initiated, using an individual practice's protocols for follow-up of abnormal findings.
For Clients: Normal Newborn Behaviour
Newborns look and act differently than older babies and children. This handout will help clients understand what normal behaviour is and what to do if signs arise that may indicate illness. This document is also available in five other languages.
